November, November (1980)

November 8, 1980 -- Our family had a fun excursion today--we went to see two movies "Herbie goes bananas" and "Bedknobs & Broomsticks". And Kelli was SO GOOD! She sat and enjoyed the movies, and remembered to go to the bathroom during the intermission, and shared popcorn with everyone else really nicely. Since everybody had been so good, we decided to go to Swenson's Ice Cream Parlor, too. Kelli wanted "pink ice cream" so that's what she had. And she got to tip the waitress--her daddy let Kelli hand her two quarters.  Kelli said that what she liked best in the movies was the witch.

November 13, 1980 -- Kelli started dance class today. This morning we bought her a pair of pretty black ballet shoes. And at 3 pm we went to her class, at the United Sports Association in Santee. Her teacher is Pat Beatty, who is a friend of Grandma Lund. [This is my sister Arlene's mother-in-law.] Kelli had fun, and seemed to catch on pretty fast. They did tap and ballet exercises, and then did a cute little routine called "Mickey Mouse's Birthday." For the [up-coming] Christmas program, they are going to learn "I got the chicken pox for Christmas" and Kelli thinks the scratching she must do in that dance is really fun!

November 21, 1980 -- Kelli went on a date with daddy tonight! He took her to the Century Theatre in Mission Valley and they saw "The Song of the South." Kelli loved it! She sang "Zip-a-dee-do-dah" all the way home! She told me this: "I liked the birds and the bees and the butterflies and frogs and fish. I know how to sing zip-a-dee-do-dah! I like that song!"

November 23, 1980 -- Kelli has learned that her name is "Kelli Evon Layton" so she says it all the time--but gets carried away. She calls us "Daddy Evon Layton" and "Mommy Evon Layton" and thinks she is really funny!

In November, Kelli was measured and stood 38 inches tall.

November 25, 1980 -- Our family went to eat at Bob's. We really had fun--and the waitress complimented Kelli and Abbi on their good behavior in the restaurant. We were really proud of them! When we left, and got in the car to go home, Kelli began trying to read the signs round about. She has just recently begun to learn the small letters of the alphabet [having learned the capital letters already], so she is starting to point out "capital" versus "small" letters.  So tonight she said, "Hey Mommy, there's a capital B." I said, "Where's a capital B?" Kelli said, "Right up there, by the o!"  And sure enough, she was reading the sign [on the restaurant].

November 27, 1980 -- was Thanksgiving, and we spent the day with our family--Uncle Michael, Auntie Arlene, Jenna and Lance, G and G Lund and Susan, and Uncle Bruce and his girlfriend Judy [Auntie Judy, as she would be...]. Then we went for a drive and ended up at the airport. Kelli was quite upset, because she wanted to ride on the airplane that we watched taking off. Then we went to look at tuna boats, and Kelli really thought she should get to ride on them. When we reached Seaport Village, the merry-go-round was closed--nothing to ride anywhere!

November 28, 1980 -- Today we dressed up in our nice clothes and went to Presidio Park with Uncle Michael and family, and Uncle Bruce and Judy. Uncle Michael took lots of pictures of our family [and everyone else, too!].
Kelli, Abbi and Jenna sitting on the cannon at Presidio Park. Abbi was afraid to sit there. Poor sweet girl!
Then we went to Point Loma and played on the beach by the tidepools. Kelli promptly took off her shoes and socks, rolled up her pants and got right into that cold November ocean! At first, she was skeptical of the waves--they were awfully big!--but soon she was back in the water. She got soaked from the waist down, so I guess she had fun! Daddy took her climbing on the rocks, too, and she loved it!
